An overview of the use of studio strobe lights in a studio setting. This is as much as possible a hands-on class. You will be using the lights, not just hearing about them. Bring your camera to shoot with the strobes or borrow one.

LENGTH: 2 hours
PREREQUISITES: You don’t have to know anything about studio lighting. This is an intro meant for beginners with such lighting. However, if you bring your own camera to use, be sure you know how to use it in full manual mode and can set ISO, shutter speed, and aperture fluently. Be sure to know your camera’s synch speed. If you wish, you can have the use a full-frame DSLR for the course for an extra fee.
One-Light Studio Experience

This is a hands-on intro and use of the studio to shoot with one studio strobe. You may bring a model, a product to shoot, or use others in the class or one of sample products at the studio. This class is mainly to get you comfortable doing actual shooting with a studio strobe. This is a lighting class, not about model posing or portraiture; however, those topics will be touched on. This will not be a critiquing course; it’s purpose is to become comfortable and flexible with using light.

PREREQUISITES: There will be a little bit of overlap with “Intro to Studio Lighting,” but will assume you have some experience with shooting with a studio strobes. If you have had any experience and are comfortable with your camera in manual mode (fluent in setting ISO, shutter speed, aperture as well as knowing its synch speed), it’s ok to start here.
Two-Light Studio Experience

This is a hands-on practice lab in which a small number of students will get use studio lights, primarily working with a partner to set up and shoot using two studio strobes, with and without light modifiers. You may choose to shoot a model (one you bring or just use your studio partner) or a product (bring one or use one of the studio’s samples).

PREREQUISITES: Intro to Studio Lighting or One-Light Studio Experience or proof of equivalent experience. If you have that experience, though, you might be interested in one of the one-on-one options that include a fuller use of the studio and its equipment.
Three-Light Studio Experience

This is a hands-on practice lab in which a small number of students will get full use of a studio, working solo or with a partner to set up and shoot using standard three-light arrangements with studio strobes. You may choose to shoot a model (one you bring or just use another student) or a product (bring one or use one of the studio’s samples).

PREREQUISITES: Intro to Studio Lighting or One-Light Studio Experience AND Two-Light Studio Experience or proof of equivalent experience. If you have that experience, though, you might be interested in one of the one-on-one options that include a fuller use of the studio and its equipment.
Photographer’s Intro to Hensley Studio

Photographer’s Introduction to Hensley Studio
If you are a photographer experienced in the use of a studio and studio strobes, I’ll give you a tour of my studio and its equipment. You may try out any part that you want to try. Bring your camera. Bring your own trigger system or use mine. If you are an experienced photographer but not in the use of studio and strobes, try the Introduction to Studio Lighting—or feel free to give me a call and discuss.

Your Project, My Studio

Use my studio for your project. I will function as your lighting technician, setting up the lighting to your specs, including consulting on lighting choices.
Prerequisites: Discuss with me. At a minimum, you must be comfortable with using your camera in manual mode, fluent in setting ISO, shutter speed, and aperture. You must also know your camera’s synch speed. If you want to use the studio at your leisure without my help, let’s discuss.

Take control of your camera. This is a one-on-one course in which I, in effect, help you translate your camera’s manual into usable English. We’ll sit down with camera in hand and go through what it takes to set it up and be comfortable using it.

Take Control of Your iPhone Photography

Bring your iPhone (4 or higher) and we’ll have some fun taking and processing a set of photographs that will give you hands-on experience with the camera and iPhone software to make you comfortable with those tools and able to raise the quality of your photographs several notches. This will also give you a foundation for exploring even further among camera attachments and apps, even though the purpose will be to focus on developing a thorough knowledge of the basics of shooting and processing.

Using the camera app’s built-in tools to control exposure
Using the built-in editing capability
Using the organization tools on the iPhone
Using a free app for additional processing
Preparing an image for Instagram
Turning an image into postcard

PREREQUISITES: iPhone 4 or later. All work will be done on your iPhone. You will receive directions for installing additional apps, if needed. You must have taken at least one photo with your iPhone.
